Yet, like the choice of the players in the Prime Ministers XI cricket team, selection of the recommended candidate for Governor-General is left up to a ‘captain’s call’ from the Australian Prime Minister, interestingly an office itself that doesn’t even exist in the Australian Constitution. The appointment is then approved by the King, who hasn’t been elected by anyone in Australia, is not Australian citizen and doesn’t even reside in Australia.

The Australian Governor-General’s powers under the Constitution are extensive with control of the executive government and the ability to approve or reject legislation passed by the democratically elected Parliament. The only thing preventing the Australian Governor-General from exercising full control of the Australian government are ‘conventions’ that have no real legal force or effect under the Constitution. It is against this backdrop that a new replacement Australian Constitution is being proposed.
