The Australian Constitution has served Australia for over 120 years but a lot has changed since 1901 and it’s time for a new Constitution that properly reflects our values and who we have become as a nation.

Australia is an independent nation but with a foreign Head of State. Most Australians believe our citizens have unassailable rights, but for the most part these rights are not reflected in our Constitution and remain at the whim of the elected government of the day. Our Constitution was originally drafted by the States and the legacy of this beginning is that State and Federal responsibilities are blurred and there is inbuilt duplication of responsibilities that at times results in blame passing and ‘pork barrelling’.

THE NEW AUSSIE CONSTITUTION

The draft New Aussie Constitution retains what has worked well for Australia.

It keeps the democracy with a two tier parliament, a Prime Minister as Head of Government and Westminster style cabinet accountability.

It maintains a Governor-General but now as Head of State and with the role filled by an Australian elected by the people.

Rights AND Responsibilities

The New Aussie Constitution spells out clearly our specific rights as Australian citizens, together with our responsibilities to the nation.

The draft proposes 4 components of government: the Governor-General; the Parliament; the Executive Government; and an independent Judiciary.

Each has ‘checks and balances’ that prevent any one part from wielding unfettered power.
